This afternoon, the Senate Special Committee on Aging held a hearing to examine dramatic price increases for several breakthrough medicines. Following the hearing, John Rother, executive director of the Campaign for Sustainable Rx Pricing, issued the following statement:
“For a breakthrough medication to be effective, it needs to be affordable, yet drug makers fail time and time again to abide by this fundamental principle. The Campaign commends the Senate Special Committee on Aging for challenging the pharmaceutical industry on the irresponsible pricing strategies that deliberately deny patients and consumers access to affordable treatments. It is past time for drug makers to adopt a different approach that considers both patient affordability and the need for a sustainable health insurance system. Profit maximization alone is no longer justified.”
